Working as a specialist teacher of children with special educational needs can be one of the most rewarding, challenging and satisfying careers in the teaching and education sector.
Its all about working with children that have special learning needs, such as those with physical disabilities, behavioural problems, sensory impairments, emotional problems, speech difficulties, mental health conditions, psychiatric problems, or specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia, dyscalculia and dyspraxia.
Phoebe has taught in a SEN department for a number of years, below she shares a snippet from her experience:
”Both across my time teaching in Australia and the United Kingdom, I have worked with children with a wide range of special needs. The support and structures in place in London are second to none, and made working in a busy school environment wonderful. Whilst teaching as a supply and long term primary school teacher in mainstream settings, I was witness to magical moments with SEN students. From tying their shoes independently, to holding a pencil correctly, to writing a full sentence or catching a ball midair, all of these moments made me feel like I was really making a difference through the support and teaching I provided. SEN students have brought wonderful joy to my teaching and I truly encourage anyone to take on the challenge and teach in such an environment. It is an exceptionally rewarding part of teaching and one that I cannot recommend enough”.
