A friend of mine approached me recently, between jobs and confused about her next step. She had just been to an interview and was unsure about what to do, “I am not sold on the role but the people that interviewed me were so nice and I feel like they would be really supportive”. Immediately I prompted her to go for it, and I soon found myself in a conversation with this friend about my journey with anzuk and a similar feeling I had 3 years ago after interviewing with anzuk in London.
Fresh out of a marketing degree, I (like most recruiters) ‘fell’ into a recruiting role. While I loved talking to candidates and clients, matching them with their dream role, I knew that being a recruiter wasn’t for me. I wanted to utilise my degree, my passion in some way but wasn’t sure how to break in.
When I arrived in London a few years later I naturally found myself interviewing for roles that fit into my recruitment expertise. I settled into the thought that I would have to stick with this line of work for a while, being new in London may not be the best time for a career change.
But then I met with anzuk.
Immediately, when I walked into the door for interview everyone greeted me with a warm ‘hello!’ (hugely different to the two other recruiters I had visited that morning). During my interview with the UK Director, Ben we discussed recruitment roles, and then we discussed the resourcing role. He described it to me as educator attraction, a bit of recruitment and a bit of marketing. Social media, advertising, University fairs, job ads; “whatever works, who knows how far this role could go”.
I now write this article three years later, in the anzuk Melbourne office where I am the Digital Marketing Coordinator for Melbourne and our four Australian regional offices. When I started we didn’t have a marketing team, we now have a global team of four, spanning Australia, the UK and the US.
Moving from a Resourcer in London to the Marketing team in Melbourne has been a huge journey, and my role has changed absolutely from when I started. What hasn’t changed was the support and warmth I felt from day one. When I moved from the London to Melbourne office, not once did I feel out of place or like the new kid, I was welcomed just like I was in London.
Going back to my conversation with my friend and the advice I gave her, I can confidently say I would give the same encouragement to anyone. If you don’t know what you want to do, or if you find yourself at a crossroad, choose a company that makes you feel supported and gives you the chance to grow. Ben and our CEO Daniel both knew the avenue I ultimately wanted to go down, and supported me in this growth both globally and from Resourcing to Marketing within the business.
It is amazing to see the difference in the company (and myself) over the last three years and I can’t wait to see what happens in the next three.
