I loved studying to be a teacher. The Masters of Teaching is a great degree and I had wonderful placement schools and mentor teachers. However, once I graduated, I quickly found I was perfectly happy to leave the teaching to others and find my way into education related roles instead.

Mid-2016, I applied to work in the office at anzuk, not entirely knowing what I was applying for (or that the company name is spelled out rather than said – I remember asking about that in my first interview). I had previously heard about the company but all I knew was that it was one of the major players in the Melbourne relief teaching scene. I hit up the company website to enlighten myself and pick up some useful interview material and came across the, ‘BE GREAT’, values (which I promptly tried to memorise).

During the interview process I was struck by the way anzuk endeavours to match up each teacher and teaching assistant with schools that will be a good fit for them and knew that this was an approach that I could get behind.

After joining the anzuk I was amazed at the friendly, vibrant culture in the office and every friend or relative who asked about my new job undoubtedly heard something along the lines of, ‘it’s a great place to work’, or some mention of the next lunchtime cooking competition. Over a year has passed and if anyone asks, they’ll probably hear a similar sentiment. Although, if I dig a little deeper, and move beyond the ‘small talk’ answer, I might also add that I appreciate working in a company that provides support while also giving me a lot of independence and autonomy. I could also mention that while anzuk is a very fun place to work, and I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so hard in meetings before, this doesn’t diminish the respect that exists among the staff here. That’s not to say we’re perfect, there’s always room to improve and ways to grow, but being part of the anzuk family really is rather special.
