Take your Teaching Career to Australia in 2022
Now may be the perfect time to take your teaching career to Australia. Australian borders are reopening, and new visa incentives have been announced. We spoke with Visa Go Australia’s Migration Agent Darren Chatt to discuss visa options available to teachers wishing to live and work in Australia. Moreover, our expert team provide some insight into Australia’s job opportunities.
Visas to teach in Australia
To enter Australia, you will need a valid visa. There are various options available to those wanting to live and work in Australia. When choosing a visa, applicants should consider their eligibility, the amount of time they want to spend in Australia and the fees involved. Seeking advice from a Migration Agent is good practice to ensure you are applying for the correct visa. You can complete free visa assessments on Visa Go Australia’s website.
The main visa types available to those wishing to live and work in Australia include:
A Working Holiday Visa
A popular option due to the low cost and quick processing times. This visa allows you to live and work in Australia for up to 3 years. Working holiday-makers can now work for the same employer for more than 6 months without requesting permission.
Basic eligibility includes:
- You must be aged between 18-30 (or 18-35 for French, Canadian and Irish passport holders) at time of application
- Be an eligible passport holder
For full details and a free visa assessment visit Visa Go Australia’s website.
Working Holiday Makers who arrive in Australia between 19 January 2022 and 19 April 2022 will be refunded their visa fee ($495). This refund applies to both current offshore visa holders and new applicants who arrive within that timeframe.

A Skilled Visa
A skilled visa (subclass 189, 190 and 491) may be better suited for those wishing to live in Australia long-term. This visa can take 12-18 months to process and will cost around £3000. There are multiple stages involved in skilled visa applications.
Depending on the visa subclass applied for, you will become a permanent resident of Australia or have a viable pathway to do so. You must be under the age of 45 at the time of invitation to apply for a skilled visa. An Australian job offer is not required for this visa type.
You can seek advice from a migration agent via Visa Go Australia’s free skilled visa assessment.
An Employee Sponsored Visa
Depending on the job market and your teaching specialisation, some Australian schools may offer you a job and sponsorship. An employer sponsored visa allows you to temporarily live in Australia whilst working for your nominated employer. You must first find a school to sponsor you before applying for the visa. The costs and processing times are considerably less than a skilled visa.

Other Visas
Other visa pathways may include a partner visa or student visa. You can learn more about these options here. For most Australian visas, applicants must not have any substantial medical or criminal issues.
The Australian Government recently published a temporary relaxation of working hours for student visas. This allows students to work more than 20 hours per week.

Teaching jobs in Australia
Once your visa is granted you can look towards securing a teaching job. At anzuk we have seen an increased demand for teaching professionals in Australia. This includes casual teachers, teachers in contract and ongoing roles across Australia.
Working holidaymakers have the usual option of doing casual relief teaching (supply/subbing/temp) or looking into securing a contract role.
The options are plentiful for those on long-term visas. At anzuk we can work with you to find the perfect job role in Australia. Some applicants get to know early childhood services or schools first through casual work. Contrastingly, others prefer to get straight into a role and have full ownership over their classes.
We work with early childhood services and schools throughout the East Coast of Australia. This includes both metropolitan and regional areas. If you are looking for a change, then could be the time to pack your suitcase and start your Aussie adventures.
