As an Education Recruitment Consultant there are definitely some days that stick with you as memorable. Looking back on the last year and a half at anzuk and thinking back to the most memorable moments I have had, I immediately think about the first time I knew I’d assisted a teacher in giving something a go which led to an amazing opportunity for them.

I was looking to assist a school we work very closely with to find them a mathematics teacher for a week long block. Discussion with the school gave me the information that the role would require them to teach a couple of tricky year 9 classes as well as some VCE Mathematics (something the teacher was qualified to teach but had some apprehension in taking). I was aware that the role had the potential to extend and it could be a great opportunity for someone seeking some longer term employment to put their best foot forward and land a contract.

From discussions with the teacher I knew they had apprehension in accepting the block as they hadn’t a lot of experience delivering a VCE Mathematics curriculum on top of managing some notoriously tricky kids in those Year 9 classes. We had a really positive conversation in the way they will be supported by the school and there was also an opportunity to pop by a few days early have a chat with the head of Mathematics in preparation.

The teacher accepted the role. As I checked in with the school throughout the week I received glowing reviews about the teacher, and the call when I got the call from this teacher at the end of the week they told me they’d had “the best week” of their teaching life. They’d done such an amazing job in engaging with the students and staff that they were then asked to complete a long service leave replacement straight away.  As I knew could be the case a Mathematics/ Science role was advertised towards the end of the teachers block of work, they applied and were the successful applicant.

The ability we have to form these relationships that through hard work from our teachers and the right support from anzuk can lead to career opportunities and progression is my favourite part of the job.
