As an Overseas Educator, in particular those from the Southern Hemisphere, I’m sure you’re used to the School Year perfectly aligning with the calendar year, and therefore the UK Term Dates can be a little confusing at first!
For starters, the UK academic year starts in September & finishes the following year in July. There are only 3 terms, Autumn, Spring & Summer, with the longest holiday break being in the UK Summer time (July-August). Each one of the 3 terms is also broken up with a half-term break. So you are usually only ever 6 or 7 weeks away from a nice rest-bite for the term.
Excellent chance to book a trip overseas to Europe or explore the wonders of the British Isles right?
Here are a few tips when considering what time of the year to arrive:
- Looking for a contract? We recommend trying to arrive at the start of the term. There are usually more contracts available in September (Autumn Term) & January (Spring Term), & schools ideally look for an Educator to start the Term in the classroom. Arriving later than the start of the term, isn’t always a deal breaker, but does help if you can start then! If you want to arrive just before the summer, April (Summer Term), is always another common time for schools to look for ongoing teachers.
- Looking for casual/supply work? Your arrival time becomes a lot more flexible. The is usually a consistent amount of supply work available across the school year, with a few exceptions being the first couple of weeks at the beginning on the school year in September. & the final couple of weeks at the end of the school year, in July.
- Unsure at this stage? That’s totally fine. You can start planning your UK adventure without your work preferences being confirmed & not knowing exactly when you want to arrive!
