Choosing a career path can be a difficult decision.  A career in Early Childhood Education takes a special type of person; every day is filled with humour, excitement and challenges. Being very busy, the days pass us by and we rely on each other to work as a team.

I mean, what’s not to love about a day filled with screaming children, parents with high expectations, stringent rules and guidelines, going home covered in paint, snot and vomit and overall being emotionally challenged throughout the day?

The sense of accomplishment in being part of a child’s journey of growth is not like any other experience. We watch them take their first steps; we assist children to overcome obstacles; we introduce concepts that they have difficulty understanding and then witness the final grasping of meaning – all of this makes our job worthwhile. Our successes are defined not only by our daily wins, but by our failures too. We never give up on a child because they don’t “fit in” or “they exhibit challenging behaviour.”

The ups and downs of being an Early Childhood Educator make it more than just a job. 85% of Early Childhood Educators describe their work as a profession rather than a job. I started my journey as an Early Childhood Educator in 2010 and have never looked back.

My first full time job was as a trainee in a bank. I felt I was slowly losing my senses, becoming increasingly unhappy with my life.  My best friend was a Lead Educator at an ELC. Each time we caught up, I felt jealous at how happy she was and how unhappy I was. So when a job came up at her workplace, I quickly jumped at the opportunity.

Over the past eight years I have worked across all rooms within multiple Early Childhood Centres, in training and assessment, client management within private training organisations and now as a recruiter.  There are endless opportunities for growth, with the opportunity to ‘side-step’ to other avenues within our industry.

We are extremely lucky to have a wealth of knowledge in an area that is sought after. It is one of Australia’s fastest growing industries, with no shortage of jobs. Early Childhood Educators experience their fair share of stress, outweighed by the satisfaction that comes from being part of shaping future generations.

We are strong. We are resilient. We are Educators.
